How to prepare a PowerPoint template so Copilot generates on-brand slides
Set your brand colours and fonts in the theme, build a full set of named layouts in the slide master, and use real placeholders rather than loose text boxes. Copilot styles the slides it generates using the active theme and the available layouts, so when those are properly built, its output arrives on brand. The work is in the template, not in the prompt.
Copilot does not invent your brand. It borrows whatever the file already has. A blank or generic file gives it nothing to borrow, which is why so many AI-generated decks look like default Office.
Why do theme colours matter to Copilot?
Copilot creates new shapes, text and charts, and those elements pull their colours from the theme palette. If your brand colours are set in the theme slots, Copilot's new content inherits them automatically. If the colours were painted onto existing shapes instead, Copilot has no way to know them and falls back to defaults.
Setting fonts in the theme works the same way, so the heading and body type Copilot applies match the brand without anyone selecting them.
Why does Copilot need named layouts?
Copilot places generated content into slide layouts. A template with a rich set of layouts, a title, section divider, content, comparison and closing layout, gives Copilot appropriate structures to fill. A template that is really just a decorated title slide leaves Copilot reaching for basic default layouts, and the brand structure is lost.
The more complete and well-named the layout set, the closer Copilot's output lands to a deck a designer would have built.
What else helps the output?
Use real placeholders in the layouts, because Copilot fills placeholders predictably and the text inherits their formatting. Keep the layouts clean and uncluttered so generated content has room. And start from the .potx, so the branded theme is active from the first slide.
At Ideaseed we now prepare templates with Copilot explicitly in mind, structuring the theme, layouts and placeholders so a client can run Copilot and get slides close enough to present, rather than a generic draft that defeats the point of using AI at all.
To make Copilot produce on-brand slides, build the brand into the theme colours and fonts, provide a complete set of named layouts, and use placeholders. Copilot applies what the template gives it, so a well-built template is the whole game.
