Can Microsoft Copilot create a PowerPoint from a Word document?
Yes. In PowerPoint, Copilot offers a Create presentation from file command that reads a Word document and builds slides from it. It maps your Word heading styles to slide titles and structure, so a document with proper Heading 1 and Heading 2 styles produces a clean deck, while a document formatted with bold text and manual spacing produces a mess.
The feature works. Whether it works well comes down to two things you control: how the Word document is structured, and how your PowerPoint template is built.
How does Copilot decide what goes on each slide?
Copilot reads the document's heading hierarchy. A Heading 1 typically becomes a new section or slide title, Heading 2 becomes supporting points, and body text becomes slide content. It is reading structure, not appearance.
This is why a document where someone made text large and bold instead of applying Heading 1 confuses Copilot completely. The text looks like a heading to a human but reads as ordinary body text to the AI. The fix is to apply real heading styles, which takes minutes and transforms the output.
Will it match your brand?
Only if your template is set up for it. Copilot applies the active PowerPoint template's theme, layouts and colours to the slides it generates. If your organisation has a properly built template with named layouts and theme colours, Copilot's output lands close to on brand. If there is no real template, you get generic Office styling.

What is the practical workflow?
Write or clean the Word document using heading styles, set your branded template as the active theme in PowerPoint, then run Create presentation from file. Treat the result as a strong first draft rather than a finished deck. You will still refine the narrative, but the structure and styling arrive built.
