What is the difference between a slide master and a slide layout?
What is the difference between a slide master and a slide layout?
A slide master is the top-level template slide that sets fonts, colours, background and default positioning for everything below it. A slide layout sits beneath the master and defines one specific slide type, such as a title slide or a two-column content slide. The master controls the defaults; each layout controls a single slide arrangement. Edit the master and the change flows down to every layout.
Picture a family tree. The master is the parent, the layouts are the children, and the slides you build in your deck are the grandchildren that inherit from a chosen layout.
What does the slide master control?
The master holds the settings you want applied everywhere: the theme fonts, the background, the position of a logo that appears on every slide, and the default text formatting. Change the heading font on the master and every layout updates at once, which is what makes the master so powerful and so easy to break if edited carelessly.
You reach it through View then Slide Master. The largest slide at the top of the panel is the master itself.
What does a slide layout control?
A layout defines the structure of one slide type. The title layout positions the title and subtitle. A content layout sets up the placeholders for body text or images. A section divider layout might use a full-colour background with a single large heading.
Each layout inherits from the master but can override it where needed. A section divider can carry a dark background while the master stays light, because the layout sits one level down and can make its own choices.
Why does the distinction matter for templates?
Control. When the hierarchy is set up properly, a presenter only ever chooses a layout, never builds a slide from scratch, and the master guarantees consistency underneath. When people do not understand the difference, they decorate individual slides instead of using layouts, and the template loses all its power.
At Ideaseed we see decks where every slide was formatted by hand because the team never knew the layouts existed. Building a clear set of named layouts on a well-structured master is what turns a file into a template people can actually use.
A slide master sets the defaults for the whole presentation, while slide layouts define each individual slide type beneath it. Master changes cascade to every layout, so understanding the hierarchy is what lets you control a template instead of fighting it.
