Why does Copilot ignore my brand template?
Why does Copilot ignore my brand template?
Copilot is not ignoring your template. It is applying whatever theme, layouts and colours are active in the file, and if those are generic, the output is generic. The usual causes are an active theme still set to default Office, a template with no real slide layouts, or brand colours painted directly onto shapes instead of set in the theme. Copilot can only use structure that exists.
The frustration is understandable. You have a brand template, you ask Copilot to generate slides, and the result looks nothing like it. The reason is almost always in how the template is built.
Is the branded template actually the active theme?
Copilot styles its slides using the presentation's current theme. If you generate slides in a blank presentation, or in a file that was started from default Office and never had your theme applied, Copilot has no brand information to use. Starting from your .potx, or applying your theme first, gives Copilot the palette and fonts to work with.
This is the most common cause and the quickest fix. No brand template applied means no brand output.
Does your template have real layouts?
Copilot places content into slide layouts. If your template is really just a title slide with some manually decorated slides behind it, there are no named layouts for Copilot to populate, so it falls back to basic ones. A template with a proper set of layouts in the slide master gives Copilot somewhere to put the content on brand.
Layouts are the scaffolding. Without them, the AI has nothing to build on.
Are your colours in the theme or on the shapes?
If brand colours were applied by selecting shapes and typing hex codes, they live on those shapes only, not in the theme. Copilot generates new shapes, which pull from the theme palette, so they come out in default colours. Setting the palette in the theme colour slots is what lets Copilot's new content inherit the brand.
At Ideaseed we now audit templates specifically for this, because a template that looks branded to a human can still be invisible to Copilot if the colours and layouts are not set up the way the AI reads them.
Copilot ignores a brand template when the brand lives on shapes and one-off slides rather than in the theme and layouts. Build the palette into the theme, set up real slide layouts, and start from the branded file, and Copilot's output lands on brand.
