How to create a pitch deck template in PowerPoint
How to create a pitch deck template in PowerPoint
Build a slide master with a named layout for every slide type your pitches need, set your brand palette in the theme colours, add text and image placeholders so content lands in the right spot, then save the file as a .potx template. Done properly, a presenter builds a polished deck by choosing layouts, never by drawing boxes.
Most pitch decks fall apart because they are copied from an old deck and edited. Three slides in, the spacing is off and two shades of the brand blue are fighting each other. A template fixes the cause rather than the symptom.
Which layouts does a pitch deck actually need?
Look at your last five pitches and you will see the same slide types repeating. A title slide, a section divider, a single big statement, a two-column comparison, a team slide, a case study slide, a pricing table and a closing call to action cover most of them.
Build each of these as a layout in the slide master, not as a one-off slide. When a layout lives in the master, every deck inherits it, and updating the master updates every deck built from it.
How do you set the brand colours so they stick?
Define your palette in the theme colour slots rather than typing hex codes onto individual shapes. When colours live in the theme, the colour picker shows your brand palette first, and charts and SmartArt pull from it automatically. This is the single biggest reason a deck stays consistent across a room of different presenters.
Set your fonts in the theme too, with a heading font and a body font, so the typography holds without anyone selecting it manually.
Why use placeholders instead of text boxes?
Placeholders carry position, size, font and alignment. A presenter clicks and types, and the text appears exactly where the designer intended. Loose text boxes carry none of that, which is why decks built from text boxes drift within minutes.
At Ideaseed we see pitch decks where the team has spent more time nudging boxes than refining the message. A layout-driven template removes that work entirely, which matters most when the deck is due tomorrow and the South Africa overnight turnaround has already saved the deadline once.
A PowerPoint pitch deck template is a .potx built on a slide master, with a named layout for each slide type, brand colours set in the theme, and placeholders that put content in the right place. Build it once and every pitch starts looking designed rather than assembled.
